CTL: You must be excited to be back! What do you enjoy when touring South Africa?
NR: I’m super excited. South Africa is an amazing country and it’s always a privilege to be able to play here in such beautiful surroundings.
CTL: What can fans expect at your show at the Shimmy Beach Club?
NR: A huge party! And I brought the entire Protocol team with me!
CTL: How does your experience in South Africa compare to your tours to other parts of the world? What makes South Africa unique?
NR: The setting, the lifestyle, the people…! It’s such a vibrant place with so many areas to explore – you can’t help but feel simultaneously energized and relaxed when you’re there.
CTL: What do you make of the EDM scene in South Africa?
NR: It’s great to see EDM taking off in South Africa! I think as each country embraces a new genre they naturally bring influences from their culture which opens us up to whole new sub-genres and ultimately breathes new life into the scene. In South Africa, we’re seeing DJs include of lots of live instruments into their sets which really encapsulates the spirit of the country and celebrates their African roots.
CTL: Are there any artists or DJs from South Africa who you know of, follow, or listen to?
NR: I’m a big fan of Goldfish!
CTL: Any advice for upcoming DJs and artists looking to make their mark in the music world?
NR: It’s really about believing in yourself even when others don’t. It’s a tough industry and it’s possible to come across a lot of rejection but if you really want it you have to keep bouncing back until you someone who is willing to take a chance on you. Also, stay true to yourself and your music!
CTL: If DJs in South Africa would love to collaborate with you in future, how could they do so?
NR: That would be great! Maybe we can think of something some day! In the meantime, we actually just released the first Protocol Acapella pack at the end of last year so producers can create their own remixes, mash-ups and Protocol collaborations!
CTL: You performed at Ultra South Africa, which is happening a few weeks after your concert. How was your experience at the even, and what do you make of the festival’s growth in SA?
NR: Performing at Ultra is always an awesome experience, whether it’s in Miami, Japan, Croatia or South Africa, the guys always make sure that they add in elements of each country so that you get a feel for every place you’re at. I had a lot of fun playing there last year and it was great to see some really cool South African artists on the line-up too.
CTL: What can fans expect from you in near and distant future?
NR: Lots! 2016 is going to be a big year! I’ve got the second in the trilogy – my collaboration with Nile Rodgers – coming out this month and I’m super psyched for everyone to hear that. We’ll then have the accompanying video to follow. Aside from that you can be sure of more great output on Protocol Recordings and plenty of touring!
