We caught up with De Hofnar, who is gearing up to play at Shimmy this December.

You had a huge hit with South African band, Good Luck with the track “Back in The Day”. Did this give you a taste of what the South African music scene loves and do you feel that this song gave you insight to what to expect for your performance here?

Funny enough, the very first ideas of the track started in Amsterdam. We met each other via our booking agent and that day ended up in a jam session.  After a few weeks, we started to send updates to each other. Ben added the groovy drums and that’s the point where I instantly heard the South African vibes. So my performance will be definitely groovy, to make you all dance!

Who has been your biggest music inspiration in the last year?

It sounds really cliché, but I think that Justin Bieber did a great job the last year. He mixes dance music with pop in a really great way and has created a new sound.  But to say it’s really an inspiration could be going a little bit to far. I also got inspiration from artists like Worakls, who makes melodical deephouse, and it’s just insane how he combines classical element with club/underground music.

You have worked with some of the biggest names in music – Who would be your dream collaboration?

That’s a difficult question. I still am very honored that I had the opportunity to do remixes for Armin van Buuren and Tiesto – The two guys who, in my eyes, are the founders of the DJ industry what it is today. In the future, it would be nice if I can work with Usher. I love his voice and it would be incredible to do a collaboration with him.

Tell us a little more about yourself – where are you from, how did you start DJing, etc

I was born and raised in Tilburg, a city down the south of The Netherlands. I started producing when I was about 11 or 12 years old. At first, I was making an EDM kind of vibe in my music.

Guys like Joris Delacroix, Alle Farben and of course Bakermat, who was in that time kind of still underground, were the guys who really inspired me.

I started the project ‘’De Hofnar’’ which went big on Soundcloud. I got my first booking requests but couldn’t do that because I couldn’t DJ that well. At that time, I started DJing with a Dutch singer. It was all of different music  that I needed to mix, so I learned to DJ. So it’s because of my producing career that I learned to play.

When you are in Cape Town this December, what are your TOP “must-do’s” in the city?

Last time I was here, I had an interview on top of the Table Mountain. The view was just incredible. What I didn’t see and what I would like to do is visit Robben Island. I heard from a lot of people that it’s impressive and an important part of South African history.  Unfortunately, I’m in Cape Town for only one day. I’ve got a quite busy schedule with gigs in December and in the time in between I need to finish my album for 2017.

With beach clubs increasingly becoming the go-to entertainment venues across the party capitals of the world, as well as the cities which boast magnificent beaches, the hospitality industry is sitting up and taking note of what is obviously a winning formula. A formula that has prompted a global shift towards ‘sunset hour’ being dubbed PARTY O’CLOCK! Shimmy Beach Club, South Africa’s premier lifestyle venue is no exception and has confirmed a line up for their popular Summer Calling that will tempt anyone to spend their time outdoors during the Cape Town summer.
