We’re focusing more on the inclusion of dietary specific meals than ever before, offering carb-conscience, vegan and gluten free options.

Executive Chef, Adrian Cook has put together the perfect summer menu for Shimmy Beach Club this season.

I was lucky enough to host three media and trade lunches at the beautiful beach side restaurant this past week as a major part of the menu launch.

As usual, my main concern with a menu tasting is whether or not they have catered for us vegetarians. And the new #ShimmySummerMenu has definitely taken things to the next level!

Burrata Caprese with fresh tomato, basil pesto and balsamic reduction. Changed my life. No other way to describe it. I will eat this every day. (Except the tomatoes, but the rest – I will find you, and I will eat you)

Nowadays, most restaurants serve a veggie burger of some kind – but often they are carb-heavy, simple and pretty much not what a vegetarian/vegan eater would feel like for a dinner out (mostly because we can make better ones at home). The garlic roasted brown Mushroom Burger, with charred spinach, pine nut pesto and goats cheese was a hit with everyone at the table – herbivore and omnivore alike.

This vegan Tacos with salsa, guacamole and a spicy tomato relish with tempura fried tofu are really something special – and super unexpected. The Pool Deck Menu (served pool side) also includes cream cheese jalapeno poppers, a giant onion ring stack and corn & cheese spring rolls as a part of the Shimmy Signature Basket selection. I love tapas type meals, especially while sitting sipping on a cocktail in the summer sun.

This is a pizza-revolution. This Beetroot puree, candied butternut, charred kale, goats cheese and toasted pine nuts pizza is heaven on a plate – it’s beautiful, healthy and absolutely b e a u t i f u l! Of course the standard Margherita got a revamp too. And all pizzas can be served on a cauliflower base for just R25 extra.

The shiitake wild Mushroom Pot Sticker is a great vegan starter. I’m a massive dim sum fan so this is a natural winner for me. Another big champion on the dim sum menu is the classic spinach and cream cheese har gau.

All these options are not even including the standard sushi options (the veg rainbow roll with cream cheese California wrapped in avocado and bean curd topped with sweet teriyaki sauce is a total MUST). For The Carb-Conscious, change to cauliflower rice at R12 per portion.

“We have installed an indoor braai, especially for this new menu, flame grilling our meat. We’re cooking over Rooi Krans coals this summer, to seal in the flavour, giving the meat a beautiful crust, left full of the juices.” says Chef Adrian, “The red eye robata grilled Karoo Lamb Chops, served with fresh vegetables and salsa verde is a must-try dish.”

Shimmy Beach Club has paired up with Darling Brew to support Africa’s first carbon neutral beer.   Try the trio of Burger Sliders, with an ice-cold craft beer, or if you are feeling adventurous, then the fresh local Black Mussels, served with Darling Brew’s Blood Serpent and teriyaki sauce is for you.

Chef Adrian adds, “Our dessert menu is something special this season. The clear award-winner – the toasted brioche with local blue cheese, purple figs, toasted walnut and fynbos honey! We also created a salted caramel popcorn crème brulee, inspired by a combination of my wife and kids favourite desserts.”

Shimmy Beach Club is set to be THE place to be this summer in Cape Town, with the Summer Calling campaign kicking off on the last weekend of November.
